Starbucks in Seattle

PLEASE NOTE
The stores pictured below are labeled with information that comes directly from the official Starbucks web site. The only alterations I have made are to remove certain punctuation marks. Please do not report any errors in the names or spellings of streets or cities to me, but rather to Starbucks. Once they fix the error on their end, my database will pick it up. I will fill missing photograph dates as I have time, and I will continue to try and obtain store opening dates.

This location, now one of the few Hear Music stores, used to be one of just a few Starbucks Cafes that existed in the early 2000s. The espresso bar used to be right next to the restaurant, but after the conversion to Hear Music the bar was incorporated into the main space.

I was relieved to finally visit this store, which was listed on the Store Locator, but not yet opened, back in August 2000 when I finished my contract at Microsoft and left Seattle. Sixteen months later, I returned as promised, to find a warm store with a wooden deck which, though small in size, still adds a nice touch.

This, one of the newer stores in Seattle, is a very cool store. Open until midnight on the weekdays, and 1:00 on the weekends, it has been fairly busy the few times I've walked in, whether in the middle of the day or later at night.

Distinctive features include non-standard couches and sofas, a dresser drawer for a condiment bar, stylistic lamps, and mirrors on the walls. Around July, 2000, this was the first store where I saw a music listening station.

Despite this location's unspectacular exterior (as is typical of those locations adjoining grocery stores), its interior decor is striking, with its bright red coloring and curve motif, expressed in the tile on the floor, the carpet, and the walls. Additionally, a documents placed above the fireplace detail the store's participation in the conservation of a local watershed.

If you look really hard... at the 1600x1200 version of this image, then you might be able to see the price schedule that reveals this as a Starbucks locatation. BTW, they must have given this bank the "Key" to the city, because it's branches and ATMs are all over the city.

But, but, but there used to be a school desk like from middle school, and on a recent visit (2004) I did not see it. What happened???

The original Starbucks location, though technically not. A reader tells me the original store was a block north in the Conklin Hotel/Harbor Heights building on the SW corner of Virgina and Pike. That building was torn down in the mid-70s, forcing the move south to their current location. To see a photo go to http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~public/phot1.htm and search for "starbucks".

Now this store is posh, starting with the staircase that takes you to an exclusive second level dedicated to the Starbucks. You might notice first the outdoor balcony, and I'm sure sitting outside can be pretty nice on a pretty day, but you won't get a view of anything but the street and buildings. Inside the store, you can get a view of… yourself! In a mirror that fills an entire wall. Once you tired of inspecting your visage, take note of the two LCD monitors on the back wall displaying an ever-changing series of artworks. Finally, at the very back, when you are tired of looking at views, yourself, and art, you can get sociable in the small conference room separated by an ornate curtain.

This designers were oh-so-clever when designing this store--they managed to position it so that the sidewalk crossing the parking lot (a fairly unsual feature for grocery stores) leads right to the Starbucks' doors. Brilliant!

The city's planners were a bit less brilliant, however, when they decided to name a new thoroughfare "New Bunk Foss Road". You'd think they would have realized that "Bunk Foss Road" is a god-awful name and does not need to be reused.
