Starbucks in Santa Barbara

Carpinteria & Casitas Pass Rd., Carpinteria, California

"Carpinteria", meaning "carpentry", and I'm told it's so named because of the redwood planked canoes built by a local tribe. But enough of the silly historical babble--the real appeal of this store is the drive up US-101, which hugs the coast all the way here from Ventura. When I get around to buying that helicopter, I'll post some shots of this store and the coast.

This florid location, in the outer Santa Barbara community of Goleta, is the northenmost store in Southern California, at least along US-101. It's close proximity to UCSB (University of California at Santa Barbara) explains the "Store Hours for Finals" sign, and all the lovely, radiant, southern California college girls.

Montecito, Santa Barbara, California

I may be fluent in Spanish, but my vocabulary is limited. Nevertheless, I will hazard the guess that "montecito" means "little forest", and this Starbucks location certainly bears out its moniker. One oddity about the area is that the Coast Village exit (off the 101) is a left exit--I've seen hundreds of exits all over the country, and left exits are a definite rarity.

This store faced a bit of a controversy regarding their large outdoor sign, and eventually they had to take it down, so it now sits inside the store, on a wall, and thus gives this store a unique feature I've not seen anywhere else.

Licensed Stores
My Starbucking rule regarding store ownership are complicated and will be explained fully in my as-yet-unpublishe book, but here are the basics. If Starbucks has a proper company in a country, such as Starbucks United States or Starbucks United Kingdom, then I only count stores operated, in whole or in part (sometimes there are partnerships) by Starbucks. In these countries, stores operated under license by other companies do not count. In most countries, however, Starbucks operates stores in a joint venture with another company (such as Tata in India) or licenses the brand to a primary (exclusive or semi-exclusive) partner, such as Alsea in Latin America and western Europe or Al-Shaya in the Middle East). In such cases I visit stores operated by those primary licensees, but not stores licensed to secondary licensees such as SSP or HMSHost. Additionally, in the U.K. and France, Starbucks franchises to a small set of companies, and I do not count those stores.
