Starbucks in Long Island

PLEASE NOTE
The stores pictured below are labeled with information that comes directly from the official Starbucks web site. The only alterations I have made are to remove certain punctuation marks. Please do not report any errors in the names or spellings of streets or cities to me, but rather to Starbucks. Once they fix the error on their end, my database will pick it up. I will fill missing photograph dates as I have time, and I will continue to try and obtain store opening dates.

Although built inside a former bank, this Starbucks does not use the vault as a conference room. Still there is plenty of seating available, with chairs and tables and couches arranged in an menagerie of older and newer styles. I spotted some wicker chairs in an elevated seating area in the back of the store, but could not tell whether they were unique to the store, or a more obscure corporate design.

Back in front, a small safe sits curiously in near a corner. And in several corners are lamps with decorative shades. Curtains decorate the windows throughout the store, and a large mirror adds a homey feel to the place.

Oh, since I'm from Texas, one item puzzled me--it turned out to be a coat rack.

Most of the floor in this location is elevated maybe a foot or two, with steps, but also a curved wheelchair ramp. Can't quite figure out what the elevation is for, though.

This store has something extremely unusual just outside the bathrooms--a faucet with a deep ceramic bowl. I was told it was not a pre-existing fixture, so I wonder what it is for.

Of the myriad locations along the Jericho Turnpike, I found this one especially appealing because of the nifty skylight. Not being completly clear, it doesn't let in the full sunlight, but hey, any sunlight is good, right?

The Hamptons' third Starbucks deserves attention, not just for being situated in a cute little building on a quaint little main street, but also for its mere existence in this part of Long Island that I hear tends to resist large chains.

I was yet again puzzled by the glass partitions, one at the front door and one a the back. The baristas weren't able to tell me if they were to block the wind, or perhaps for some other insidious purpose. Hmmm...

Glen Cove

Glen Cove's downtown is neat enough, but the prohibition on u-turns made it a pain to reach this store. It was worth it, though--I love this picture window.

It took Starbucks a long time to reach the North Fork communities, but they did it in grand style with this spacious and decorative location. Make sure to look for the photographs of the area spread throughout.

Check out that funky building! From outside it looks like a greenhouse, but from inside it looks like it might have been a train car, except for the brick walls and odd shape.

This second store out on towards the eastern end of Long Island is pretty, but not nearly as large as the Bridgehampton store.

This store had something sad on it's community board, a photo of a missing person, a man in his 70s.

Oh, and just to be clear, the tiled red roof and ornate towers belong to the church behind the Starbucks, not the Starbucks itself.

I found it amusing that this store is located on Wall Street--the other Wall Street, that is. But more interesting is the art project on display, siren logo composed of egg shells, put together by the talented barista Darlene.

Long Beach

Pork may have the distinction of being the other white meat, and I guess this little community has the distinction of being the other Long Beach, perhaps less well known than the west coast spot immortalized, along with Compton, by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. But I digress.

This split-level store has the most diverse collection of art on the walls I've seen to date, from paintings to photos to 3D pieces. There's even stained glass on the windows that I'm not sure is art of decoration.

Like Harry Potter can speak to snakes, I can speak to Starbucks, and this one tells me it feels soooooo left out to be excluded from the store locator.

Plenty of Starbucks offer live music on a regular basis, but this is the first location I can recall that features a magic show.

Instead of works from local artists, this store displays paintings from some guys named Picasso and Van Gogh. I don't thinkt they are from Long Island. And I don't think the paintings are the originals. I also noticed a large table in a style I did not recognize.

Mattituck

From the facade you might guess a bland strip mall store, but the long brick wall gives this store a nice touch.

This location has a back door leading out to a back parking area, and next to that door is a private little seating area not visible from the front. There's a cool piece of art on display, a caricature of two Starbucks customers (or perhaps partners).

Or maybe not. Word is the store has been remodeled.

This store fooled me--it's larger than it appears from outside. According to the manager, it surprises the customers too. And oh, what customers! I spent maybe thirty minutes here, and it was a veritable fashion show of girls in workout clothes, and some outfits that surely would have gotten them sent to the principal's office (at least at my high school).

As soon as I entered, I thought this store unusually large for a small community in eastern Long Island. A barista confirmed that it was just a coincidence that the existing space was so large, but that the store did fill up occasionally.

Anyhow, I'd like to give a shout out to that lady in the Dallas Cowboys jacket that wasn't clear on the concept of a drive-thru store. She apparently didn't realize that you should stay IN the car and drive around to to the window, rather than leaving it parked (and running) right in front of the door, in the drive-thru lane. Some people! I should have parked it properly for her.

This store is pretty enough that I almost forgive Starbucks for repeatly forcing me to drive out to the farthest ass-reaches of Long-effing-Island. Sure, there are many pretty communities out here, but there's too many @#$%^ speed traps!!!

Licensed Stores (not operated by Starbucks)

PLEASE NOTE
The list below is not meant to be a complete list of licensed stores. Some licensed stores are not listed on the Starbucks web site, and some of the stores listed below might have closed. That's not really important. I only keep track of them so I know which ones I don't need to visit. But if you know for certain that any of these are actually operated by Starbucks, please let me know (and send me a phone # so I can double-confirm).
