Starbucks in Dallas & Fort Worth

PLEASE NOTE
The stores pictured below are labeled with information that comes directly from the official Starbucks web site. The only alterations I have made are to remove certain punctuation marks. Please do not report any errors in the names or spellings of streets or cities to me, but rather to Starbucks. Once they fix the error on their end, my database will pick it up. I will fill missing photograph dates as I have time, and I will continue to try and obtain store opening dates.

This is the flagship store for Dallas, and it is definitely one to see!

According to the staff, it's the largest in Texas, over 3400 square feet. That size has come in handy already, though, as it has become a very popular hang-out to socialize and work. Most mornings when I drove by for my coffee before work, there's at least half a dozen laptops out.

One of the first things you might notice as you order your coffee is the custom-made tile covering the wall behind the bar and counter.

Then there's the inviting furnishings, from the large four-person ottomans to the sofas and couches, most or all designed especially for this store (and maybe other flagship stores too). The chairs and tables are different, as is the condiment bar (stone), and even the faucet handles in the bathroom. And even though it doesn't get very cold in Texas, a fireplace adds to the sense of comfort. One really cool touch is a pair of think curtains enclosing a sofa and giving a sense of privacy.

This is one of the niftier stores in Dallas, because of the unusual rounded facade and also the patio in back with a fountain.

Back in 2003 I was told that Bill Cosby came in one day, apparently a fan of Starbucks, and signed on of their aprons. Cool!

There is another location right across the highway, but it's a toss-up whether this really qualifies as the second instance of multiple stores at the same intersection, because it is a major highway (U.S. 75) that has to be crossed, not just a street like at Preston and Park in Plano.

Anyhow, this store, besides employing some really cool baristas and "Ghost World" fans, has a couple of neat futures. The most noticeable is a stone column in the middle of the seating area. This column is square, but there is rounded column--half of it juts out from a wall. Interesting combination.

While one of the walls is covered by one of the corporate standard mural wallpaper, the design on another wall I've not seen anywhere else. It does appear corporate, however. Those insidious design people are getting better and better at making each of an ever increasing number of stores sport a unique feel. The tile pattern and carpeting at this store for example--I don't recall having seen either pattern before, although I'm not sure about the tiling.

This store, the largest in Texas (as of 2007) pretty much sets the standard for posh mall locations. The Clasico design, of course, but add to that a style wooden conference table and an outdoor patio on a balcony. In fact, I cannot think of any other mall stores with balcony patios.

This store, the second largest in the city, also happens to be located at an intersection that in 1999 was ranked as one of the 10 most dangerous in the country.

Perhaps to make up for the daily hazard of driving into work, some of the baristas from this store were lucky enough to be tapped to server coffee to the Dallas Mavericks in their dressing room. Coool!

I revisited this store in March 2003 and noticed a few more cool things. Coolest, in my estimation, was a Starbucks Beijing t-shirt brought back by a partner or customer who visited the Forbidden City. There was also a drawing of the Pike Place Starbucks done by a former customer. And finally, a piece of artwork by a partner who uses coffee to paint.

Angles is the operative word when describing this location. Rather than the standard four walls (with or without picture windows) that seem to be the norm, the walls of this store angle to and fro. And in back, the almost-obligatory corporate standard mural wraps around a curved wall for a change.

As I re-visited the various Dallas stores, I kept noticing unusual elements that I had missed when not paying close enough attention, and this store is no exception. The wall in back that separates the main lobby from the hallway to the restrooms does not reach to to the ceiling. How odd, yet tempting... to the pole vaulters out there.

At this newer store in D/FW I noticed the tiled wall behind the bar that I had previously noticed only at "special" stores, like the flagship store in Dallas. I noticed that at each store where I had seen the tile, it was always a different color. I wondered if that was intentional, and if they planned to make the tile a standard feature of stores, in which case they would run out of colors at some point. I also noticed a new style of community board with round magnets instead of pushpins to hold notes in place.

I spoke to the manager and she explained that she actively promotes the store, which surely accounts for the higher level of traffic.

This Plano location was the first to open in Texas, back in October of 1994. Even as more locations were added in the metroplex, this store maintained its rank as the highest volume store in the state for some time before another store surpassed it, no doubt due to its location in a highly developed section of Plano just off the North Central Expressway and across from the high volume Colin Creek Mall. Across the freeway and south in Richardson is the well-know telecommunications corridor, a hotbed of technology industry, and plenty of other software technology companies, such as Macromedia, where I began my present career, and where I developed a love for Starbucks coffee, on account of double shifts and late nights working on a years-late product.

The utility room (with the fuse boxes and such) is exposed on the side of the building, right next to the patio, and also juts into the Starbucks instead of being hidden in back or behind a dumpster. Nothing particularly significant about this--I just didn't notice it at first, which is why I need to start making return trips to these stores.

Don't worry--this store still has plenty of room to kick back.
