This store not only has a second floor with a balcony, but a very spacious outdoor patio.

This store is actually inside the port, which makes it, along with its sister at E1, one of only two stores in a public transportation station (airport, subway, etc.).

OPENED: 9/12/2003, PHOTO: 5/25/2008

This store, in a building that looks very new and modern, appears to be designed completely like an American store--I did not notice a single Greek touch. Additionally, in terms of friendliness, the staff I met was exceedingly so, just as I would expect of a Starbucks in America.

ASC, Athens, Greece

OPENED: 7/29/2002, PHOTO: 5/26/2008

This store is unusual because it is located in the Support Center for Starbucks in Athens. The store is primarily used for training, but it also sells beverages and is listed on their web site, so I will count it.

Glyfada II, Athens, Greece

OPENED: 3/28/2005, PHOTO: 5/26/2008

A very small store, but with a covered patio. Given its proximity to the beach and the sea air, patrons probably prefer to sit outside anyway.

Built in a very homey two-story wood and brick structure, this store, one of the prettiest in Attiki, is actually the former stable of Kasaveti, a very rich resident of Kifisia.

Kolonaki 2, Athens, Greece

OPENED: 3/11/2004, PHOTO: 5/25/2008

This location is farther away from the center of Athens and has a decor that is more modern and similar to an American store. Almost forgot--the tables and chairs on the patio--completely different.

Korai Street, Athens, Greece

OPENED: 9/20/2002, PHOTO: 5/24/2008

Third store I visited in Greece, one of the busiest, and the third with ornate decor throughout. The ceiling is really cool, with a pair of what appear to be skylights, except they are covered in purple. There is also a balcony on the second floor. and many status.

Monastiraki, Athens, Greece

OPENED: Mar 2011, PHOTO: 4/18/2012

This newest store in Athens has a more modern design and is the third largest in the city. What is most unusual is that the seating is spread out across FOUR levels (well, two of them are really half-levels). With ample picture windows, this is a spectacular place to hang on a sunny day.boasts a cool design and shares space with other business, making it look more spacious than it really is.

This store has the more radical, most futuristic storefront of all the stores I saw in Athens.

Glass, glass, and more glass! I loooove glass stores. Now, please correct me if I have the wrong store, but I think I saw b/w photographs of what the area used to look like back in the day.

Voted the best Starbucks in Europe, this store, in an old building, sports a very cool tile floor, a set of back doors that lead to a patio. But that's just the bottom floor. Follow the wide stone steps up to the second floor, and you will find a very large space, almost suitable to host a dance, I would say, with tall ornate ceilings. The staircase continues, albeit with wooden steps, at various angles up to a third floor and possibly beyond, but Starbucks' space ends at the second floor. But even without that 3rd floor, this seems like one of the largest stores in the world. Too bad I could not get a better photo because of that stupid stand out front!

This store closes at TWO AM on Sunday, the latest closing of any store in any mall I have seen anywhere!!!

Voula, Athens, Greece

OPENED: 12/19/2002, PHOTO: 5/26/2008

This store's main floor and seating area might seem small, but there's also the large bottom floor, the balcony (for yucky smoking), and, outside across the walkway, a covered seating area. Plenty of room for all of Voula!

Licensed Stores
My Starbucking rule regarding store ownership are complicated and will be explained fully in my as-yet-unpublishe book, but here are the basics. If Starbucks has a proper company in a country, such as Starbucks United States or Starbucks United Kingdom, then I only count stores operated, in whole or in part (sometimes there are partnerships) by Starbucks. In these countries, stores operated under license by other companies do not count. In most countries, however, Starbucks operates stores in a joint venture with another company (such as Tata in India) or licenses the brand to a primary (exclusive or semi-exclusive) partner, such as Alsea in Latin America and western Europe or Al-Shaya in the Middle East). In such cases I visit stores operated by those primary licensees, but not stores licensed to secondary licensees such as SSP or HMSHost. Additionally, in the U.K. and France, Starbucks franchises to a small set of companies, and I do not count those stores.
